Zwelethu Mthethwa monograph, Aperture 2010 [MFA 1989]

via 81 press

Zwelethu Mthethwa's first monograph of his photographs will be released by Aperture next year entitled Zwelethu Mthethwa. Mthethwa attended RIT on a Fulbright scholarship, and among an active teaching and exhibition career he was featured in the 2005 Venice Biennale, representing South Africa.

quote via

'Mthethwa's work challenges the conventions of both Western documentary work and African commercial studio photography, marking a transition away from the visually exotic and diseased--or "Afro-pessimism," as curator Okwui Enwezor has described it--and employing a fresh approach marked by color and collaboration.'

Jessica Todd Harper in Real Simple [MFA 2001]

cover image from Interior Exposure

In the current issue of Real Simple you can find photographs by an alumnus, Jessica Todd Harper. Real Simple is a great lifestyle magazine, so ch-ch-check it out at a newsstand near you. Jessica currently teaches at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and at the International Center of Photography in New York City. Her book Interior Exposure was recently published in 2008 by Damiani.

Serendipitously, some of her images from Interior Exposure are on display now at the George Eastman House under the title What We’re Collecting Now: The Family Photographed.

Visit her website to see more of her work: http://www.jessicatoddharper.com/index.html

Common Ground at George Eastman House

Matt thought this might be interesting:

http://commonground.eastmanhouse.org/eastman.php

What is Common Ground?

Common Ground is a global meet up celebrating the Commons on Flickr to be held by as many of the institutions in the Commons. This will consist of a projection onto the participating institutions building at night (or suitable day-time location) using a slideshow of content from the Commons on Flickr accounts that is curated by you, our community. This will be hosted on the weekend of 2nd – 3rd October across the globe (albeit time-differences). Making the Flickr Commons go live through a connected slideshow. You will get to meet the staff behind the Commons and we will get to know you.

When and Where is it?

It is Friday, October 2, beginning at 3:30pm in the Curtis Theatre. Regular museum admission is required. It will go until 5:00pm. Refreshments will be served.
