Angela Kelly [Faculty]

During the month of August, 2011, Angela Kelly (on professional academic
leave 2011-12) completed a residency at the Burren College of Art, Co Clare,
Ireland. Working daily in her studio, Angela developed a large drawing that
touched on the central themes of her residency including her research on
memory, place and history. Working in the Burren she explored traces of the
1847 famine within the landscape discovering that she shared an interest in
famine history with Maggie Ronayne, a local archeologist. She is in the
process of exploring a 19c. as yet unknown famine village as well as the
remains of a 19c. workhouse built for the indigenous poor who were forced
off their land during the height of the Poor Laws. Further research led her
to examine and photograph traces of other 19c. dwellings that exist within
former iron age ring forts and stone age sites throughout the Burren.

In September 2011, Angela Kelly exhibited, Catharsis: Images of Post
Conflict Belfast, at the Dali Museum of Photography. Dali Yunnan Province,
at the 3rd international Photography exhibition which hosts over 200
individual exhibitions. This work was nominated by the international jurors
among three other exhibitors for the best exhibit of the festival.

During the month of October, Angela Kelly will give a series of lectures in
across England, Scotland and Ireland on her work and on the work of her
current MFA thesis candidates. In November, she will return to Belfast to
continue shooting on her project Catharsis!

Transitions-Rochester is an international collaboration between Visual Studies Workshop, FOTODOK, George Eastman House and Rochester Contemporary Art Center looking at the changing city of Rochester, New York, a former company town dealing with urban sprawl, new concepts of city planning, high unemployment rates and poverty. For the past two years artists from The Netherlands and Rochester have been documenting the city's urban core through photography, video and sound for art works that investigate the changing city.

Transitions (so far) includes the work of Theo Baart (NL), Jason Bernagozzi (USA), FUA Krew (USA), Gregory Halpern (USA), Cary Markerink (NL), Juliana Muniz (USA), Oscar Palacio (CO), Andrea Stultiens (NL) and Dan Varenka (USA).

An opening reception will be held on September 2, 2011 from 6 - 9 PM. A major open house event with all the international artists and curators present, as well as live music and live graffiti writing will be on October 13, 2011 from 6 - 10 PM at Visual Studies Workshop.

Erika Heffernan’s multimedia installation includes video, photographic documents and sculpture that illuminate how we learn, comprehend, and interpret information, while questioning how we are taught and how we are expected to learn. The interactive nature of the show invites viewers to actively participate and contribute in collaboration with the artist allowing for the viewer to keep a part of the artwork. Featuring work by Sarah Hearn [MFA 2010]

[Artspace] at Untitled, a contemporary arts center located at 1 NE 3rd Street in downtown Oklahoma City currently has on display the 2010 Creativity World Biennale through January 8, 2011 in Untitled's galleries and extending into venues throughout the historic Automobile Alley district along Broadway.

Modeled after the long-running Venice Biennale, held every two years in Italy, the exhibition will focus on the visual arts and has as it’s theme, New Processes, New Approaches, New Art. It will include the work of seventeen artists selected to represent each of six different Districts of Creativity worldwide: Catalonia (Spain), Denmark, Flanders (Belgium), Oklahoma (US), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Scotland (UK). The artists representing each District are pioneers in new media. In defining the theme for the Biennale, Jon Burris, director of [Artspace] at Untitled and the Biennale stated, “The theme is based on the idea that as new technologies are developing around the world, so too are new processes of creating art involving new media and new materials. Artists world-wide are embracing new methods of producing art as a result of these new technologies and it is the goal of this Biennale to introduce new aesthetic approaches that have developed as a result.”

The Biennale is free and open to the public at [Artspace] at Untitled Tues - Fri, 10am - 5pm and Sat, 10am - 4pm. It is free and open to the public at TAP Architecture, 415 N. Broadway; Mel's Towing, 25 NW 9th St.; and 1101 N. Broadway Fri, 10am - 5pm and Sat, 10am - 4pm with guided tours being offered Fridays and Saturdays at 11am and 3pm. In Hot Mess, Alicia Ross explores the mechanism of the consensual production of symbolic values. She passionately tackles difficult subject matter and taboos within society and presents them as naked truth.

The works’ often provocative appearances highlight the artist's ongoing exploration of ideas surrounding conflicting views of feminine identity in the contemporary society and the ubiquitous virtuous/voracious societal impulses towards the female form. Ross appropriates images from online media sources and digitally translates them into cross-stitched constructions, using the sewing machine as a drawing tool. The finished pieces reflect a fusion between hand-made traditions and digital aesthetics.

In Situ brings together Stefan Petranek (professor, Herron School of Art), Susan Ferrari-Rowley (professor Monroe Community College), and New York City artist and Roberts alum, Hannah Robinett '06. Rowley, a veteran artist, whose metal and fabric sculpture has dotted the American landscape of contemporary art for many years pairs her work with the emerging mixed media art of Robinett and newly established mixed photo-media work of Petranek. Each artist's work explores strategies, materials, space, and even data to record or verify their individual concepts, whether it's Petranek's genetic code, Robinett's concept of time, or Rowley's concept of experience.

Zwelethu Mthethwa: Inner Views
The first New York museum exhibition of South African photographer Zwelethu Mthethwa (b. 1960, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) brings together three compelling series: "Interiors" and "Empty Beds" document the domestic lives of migrant workers in and near Johannesburg, South Africa, while photographs in "Common Ground" focus on shared experiences of natural disaster in urban areas, featuring houses in post-Hurricane-Katrina New Orleans, Louisiana and on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa, after wildfires.

On July 15 at 7pm, Zwelethu Mthethwa and Naomi Beckwith will speak about the work in Inner Views in a special public program in the Museum Theatre, followed by a signing of Zwelethu Mthethwa, published by Aperture and available at the Museum Store.

Lauren Greenfield

Acclaimed photographer Lauren Greenfield is considered
a preeminent chronicler of youth culture as a result of
her groundbreaking projects Girl Culture and Fast Forward.
In 2003 she was named by American Photo as one of the
25 most influential photographers working today.
Greenfield graduated from Harvard in 1987 and started her
career as an intern for National Geographic. Since 1991, her
photographs have regularly appeared in major publications
and have received numerous prestigious awards. Her work
is in many major collections throughout the United States.

Greenfield’s first feature-length documentary film, Thin,
aired on HBO, and is accompanied by a photography book
of the same name (Chronicle Books, 2006). Thin was
nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Direction in 2007.
Greenfield’s follow-up short film, Kids + Money, premiered at
the AFI Fest and won the Shorts Audience Award and was
selected as one of the top five nonfiction shorts in the world
by Cinema Eye Honors 2009.

Katrina M. d’Autremont’s relationship to her South American family and the search to find her place amidst different cultures and generations is the subject of the 26 color prints in the seriesSi Dios Quiere (If God Wants). In his juror’s statement, Andy Adams has written this about d’Autremont’s compelling work:

“The photographs in Katrina M. d’Autremont’s Si Dios Quiere present scenarios that explore issues of intimacy within her mother’s family in Argentina. Like a shoebox of snapshot memories, her pictures depict the private rituals that comprise a family’s life: cleaning the kitchen, watching television, gathering for a family feast. Interior domestic spaces dominate and each of her family members is underscored by the place that binds them together. The house where she was raised plays a significant role and in many cases the environment is a lead character, revealing how place (and our memory of it) influences and forms us. Her home is comprised of the kinds of objects that trigger memories from each of our pasts — the blue living room carpet, that familiar tablecloth, a piano — each part of an experience shared with the members of our tribe.”

With over 40,000 people attending annually, not including attendance to the 14 satellite fairs, public performances, museums and related art events it has become a place for many to make an annual pilgrimage and survey the scene. Angela Kelly in Stone Canoe [Faculty]

Angela Kelly's new work from her Catharsis series has been included in the most recent issue of Stone Canoe. This work and other visual work from the issue will be exhibited at the XL Galleries in Syracuse, NY from Jan 6-26, 2010.

Stone Canoe showcases the work of a diverse mix of emerging and well-established artists and writers with connections to Upstate New York. It is published annually, each spring, by University College of Syracuse University.

Whitney Warne's artist statement for "Sewing My Own":

The act of sewing simultaneously mass-produces and individually stitches the threads that bind our exterior identities. Utilizing photography, embroidery, and feminine postures, I hope to explore the modern female’s agency over exterior representation. These pieces carry my residue through application of personal text, image, and labor, creating an explorative and conscious construction of self. If social identity is constructed through the presentation of clothing decisions, then I strive to take representation one step further, adding real bits of my inner identity to the mass produced, making each piece one-of-a-kind and one-like-any-other.

Matt Chung's artist statement:

Asphalt is a surface that connects us to everywhere we go and enables the advancement of development and commerce. It links cities and towns and permits travel of people and transportation of goods. My images are a response to our constructed surroundings and their infrastructure. My aim is to create work that questions our assembled and expanding urban environments.

Using digital imaging, I capture the seemingly mundane and manipulate it into a new aggregate image, working in a method that mimics the patterns used during the urbanization of our environment. The result is a contemplation of common surfaces that falls between representation and abstraction, reflecting the tension created by urban expansion.

Erika Heffernan's artist statement:

From my earliest childhood I have needed to convert the visible world into patterns and symbols as an alternative to text. As early as age 4, I underwent a series of surgical interventions in order for me to be able to hear the world around me properly. Prior to these surgeries, it was extremely difficult for me to communicate to the world through traditional methods. I never learned to read properly as a result. I had to rely upon an intricate way of communicating and understanding the world visually. For years, this functioned as a survival technique, but now I have come to realize this need of mine to see the world in patterns and symbols has evolved into an integral part of my aesthetic approach.

I have found that photography is the best medium to express the push and pull between knowledge and a lapse of comprehension. When I go out to document real spaces I aim to address the tension between documentation and aesthetic construction in order to rethink the way we perceive the world through the photographic medium. For me, photographic subversion of these highly determined sites into indeterminate images of colors, forms and shapes that are devoid of clear information allow the viewer to enter the photograph in any location. This forces the viewer to engage in the piece by using their own mode of perception while engaging in a thought process related to my perception of these locations. This approach suggests what possibly might be creation of a new aesthetic and perhaps leads the viewer to even a new understanding of the world that surrounds us.

Jennifer Steensma Hoag's work has recently been curated into an exhibition titled, "Rehearse, Rewind, Repeat: Photography, Video and Performance" at Ohio University Art Gallery, located in Seigfred Hall. The exhibition was jurored by Kelli Connell.

An opening reception will take place January 12 from 6-8p with juror Kelli Connell, exhibition coordinator Elizabeth Dobson and participating artists.

Rodrigo Gonzalo-Encinar: The Worshipers

Over the next week or two the MFA Photo Blog will be showcasing the 1st year graduate candidates' work.

Our first candidate to be presented is Rodrigo Gonzalo-Encinar through his project "The Worshipers".

Rodrigo's statement on "The Worshipers":

In two previous projects I have explored the phenomenon of Spanish emigration within Europe, as well as the concept of representing a cloistered religious community through their living spaces.

My current work focuses on the portraits of individuals as they leave their places of worship. I see religion as a social practice, as a sign of both identity and of community, a private world within a larger social context. I am interested in the interaction between photographer and subject in a moment of uncertainty and emotional pause.

To pose the question of identity I examine the stereotype of standard American individuals as conservative religious people by drawing attention to the idea of ordinary. Through a system of categorization I try to extract some partial truth out of the standards of normalcy.

Credibility and ambiguity are concepts I aim to explore within this visual language. The truth of document starts to dissolve as the images reveal an ambiguity of meaning. Any sense of truth or representation of reality is constructed at the moment the photographer creates the image and in turn the viewer contemplates it.

Opportunity: Van Lier Artists Residency

I thought some students might be interested in this residency program. The application deadline is Nov. 4, just a couple of days away, but it looks like a great opportunity for someone who plans on or is residing in the NYC area.

The Van Lier Residency at Harvestworks is offered to a young (under 30 preferrably) artist from the New York area, who can provide evidence of financial need and proof that their work would benefit from significant time in Harvestworks’ studios and from expert engineering assistance.
